HSLIC Service

Data Management Planning

Through this service, the Service Manager of the data management planning service will work with other HSLIC faculty and staff to create a data management plan that helps you manage your data.

What We Do

We will work with you as consultants to create a plan for organizing and managing your data more effectively.

Why Do I Want It?

Working with experts to create a data management plan can help you think through the complete data life cycle and help you manage your data better so that you can optimize its value to you and your work.

Who Is This For?

This service is for any UNM HSC faculty member, staff member, educator or administrator who could benefit from the creation of a data management plan.

What Do I Need?

When you request the data management planning service, the Service Manager will set up a meeting with you to determine the scope of the project. As you define your objective, please consider one or more of the following:

  • A description of the data you want to organize
  • The current location and format(s) of your data
  • How long you need to archive the data and in what format(s)
  • Compliance considerations (e.g., HIPAA, FISMA, FERPA, GLB 2550, contractual agreements)
  • Data security issues such as who should have access to the data, who will be accountable for it and short- and long-term access needs
  • Data storage methods
  • Data types and structure
  • File naming conventions you wish to follow
  • Hardware requirements
  • Metadata/standards
  • Rights management/ownership (e.g., copyright and intellectual property issues)

How Much Does It Cost?

HSLIC provides this service free of charge. Plan implementation not included.
